What is meniscal repair surgery?
A meniscus injury or tear involves damage to one or both of the crescent-shaped pieces of cartilage located between your thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia). The menisci act as natural shock absorbers, cushioning the joint and helping to stabilize and smoothly move the knee. Tears often result from twisting motions or forceful impacts during sports or daily activities, causing pain, swelling, and difficulty bending or straightening the knee. Left untreated, a torn meniscus can lead to ongoing discomfort, reduced knee function, and an increased risk of arthritis.
What is Meniscus Surgery (Meniscectomy, Repair, Transplant)?
Meniscus surgery includes three primary procedures, tailored to the severity and location of the injury.
Meniscectomy
Involves the surgical removal or trimming of the damaged section of the meniscus, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. It’s typically used when the tear can’t be repaired directly.
Meniscus Repair
This procedure uses stitches or special anchors to rejoin the torn pieces of the meniscus, aiming to restore normal knee function and preserve the meniscus’s long-term health.
Meniscus Transplant
If the meniscus is severely damaged or previously removed, transplantation involves replacing it with donor cartilage, restoring the knee’s cushioning function and potentially delaying degenerative changes.

- Meniscectomy: Performed arthroscopically (keyhole surgery) by inserting a camera and specialised instruments through small incisions. The damaged tissue is trimmed or removed carefully, typically allowing for quick recovery with a newly shaped meniscus.
- Meniscus Repair: Again an arthroscopic procedure Mr Ramisetty stitches or anchors the torn edges together. Post-operative recovery involves restricted knee movement and structured rehabilitation allowing time for the tissue to heal.
- Meniscus Transplant: A more complex arthroscopic surgery where donor meniscus, matched to the perfect size of your knee, is carefully positioned and anchored into place within the knee joint. Recovery and rehabilitation are longer, involving a gradual return to normal activity over several months.

I’ve had two knee surgeries in the past year (one left, one right) both my Mr Ramisetty. I have hypermobility which caused years of dislocations, clicking, and constant pain in my knees. I have been passed between doctors and physiotherapists since I was a young teenager, none of which were able to help with my issues.
