Knee Replacement

by Mr. Ramistetty

What is a knee replacement?

Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a common procedure designed to relieve severe knee pain caused by arthritis or significant joint damage. During this operation, the damaged surfaces of the knee joint are resurfaced with artificial components, restoring function, reducing pain, and allowing you to regain movement and comfort in daily life.

When might you need a knee replacement?

Knee replacement is typically recommended when you experience:

  • Constant or severe knee pain, even at rest
  • Significant limitations to everyday activities, such as walking or climbing stairs
  • Persistent swelling or stiffness in the knee
  •  Pain that hasn’t improved with other treatments, such as medication, injections, or physiotherapy

Types of Knee Replacement Surgery

Total Knee Replacement (TKR): This replaces the entire knee joint surface, including both the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) surfaces, with durable implants.

Partial (Unicompartmental) Knee Replacement: Only part of the knee joint, typically the inner or outer section, is replaced. Suitable if arthritis affects only one area of your knee.

What Happens During Surgery?

Preparation: Surgery typically takes 1 hour and is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia.

Procedure: Mr.Ramisetty removes damaged cartilage and bone surfaces, replacing them with precisely fitted metal and plastic implants, replicating the natural knee.

Completion: After testing the knee’s movement, Mr Ramisetty closes the incision carefully to ensure minimal scarring and optimal healing.

Recovery After Knee Replacement:

Recovery involves structured rehabilitation to achieve the best outcome:

  • Hospital Stay: Usually 1-3 days.
  • Physiotherapy: Starts immediately to regain movement and strength.
  • Pain Management: Medication and therapies to control discomfort.
  • Home Care: Gentle exercises, elevation, and using walking aids initially.

Most patients resume regular daily activities within 6-12 weeks, although full recovery and improved strength may continue over several months.

Long-term Outcomes:

Knee replacement typically provides excellent long-term pain relief and improved mobility, helping you return to an active, fulfilling lifestyle. Modern knee replacements often last 15-25 years or more with proper care and exercise.
