Injection therapy

by Mr. Ramistetty

What is injection therapy?

This is an injection that will go directly into the joint space, which means it is a very targeted therapy and patients can have excellent pain-relieving results. Although there is are range of injections on the market with various claims, Mr Ramisetty will only practise evidence-based medicine and offer trusted options to care for your joints in this way.

Osteoarthritis injections can help calm a painful joint so you can move more comfortably and keep up with physio. Two main types are used:

  • Steroid injection – aims to settle inflammation quickly during a pain flare.
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) injection – a gel that aims to improve lubrication in the joint; relief is usually slower to start.

Is this for me?

You might benefit if you have:

  • Knee pain that limits walking, stairs or sleep
  • You’ve tried exercise, simple pain relief and activity changes
  • You’re not ready for surgery or want a bridge while you rehab

It’s not suitable if you have a current infection, a bleeding disorder, or certain medical issues. Your clinician will check this with you.

What happens on the day?

  1. Brief assessment and consent
  2. Skin clean and a small amount of local anaesthetic
  3. You can usually walk out after 10–20 minutes
  4. Take it easy for 24–48 hours

How quickly will it help and how long might it last?

  • Steroid: often within hours to a few days; relief typically weeks (varies).
  • HA: often takes a few weeks to build; relief can last around 6 months in some people.

Side effects and risks

  • Common: short-lived ache or stiffness after the injection.
  • Less common: facial flushing, small bruise.
  • If you have diabetes: steroid can raise blood sugar for a short time — monitor closely.
